Class of : 1970 E-mail Address: frankaman@hotmail.com Comments submitted: Jun 06, 2005 09:33 EST Comments: Greetings AHS Alumni: Antilles High School will celebrate its 52nd or 53rd commencement tonight June 6, 2003. This year \'s graduation class is composed of 112 students. As usual, about 85% of graduates have been accepted into colleges or universities. The AHS Alumni Association is presenting its second Maxie R. williams, JR award in this commencement. For those pre-1969 graduates, the Maxie Williams field is the AHS football and baseball field in Ft. Buchanan, by the golf course, so named after Maxie Williams, a 1963 AHS graduate. An excellent student, Ray, as he was called by his classmates was an honor student, a student leader and outstanding athlete. He graduated from University of Tennessee in 1967, received a commission in the US Marine Corps in 1967, was killed in Vietnam in 1968, the field was memorialized in his honor in 1969 and the first Maxie Williams award was presented in AHS in 1970. The original award was given to the male senior that best exemplified the spirit of Maxie R. Williams. The revived award will be given to the graduating senior, female or male that best lives up to those standards. The original award was presented for about five years and then was no longer given. The Alumni Association under the leadership of Pamela Fay-Williams, resurrected the award last year. Tonight, the award will be presented for the second time on its second iteration. Congratulations to all graduates, special felicitations to the the next recipient of the Maxie R. Williams JR award and welcome to the new AHS alumni. Comments By:......Lisa M. Rivera......... It was with great sadness that I read the message left by Ed Rehkopf concerning the passing of our classmate Tom McChesney. While I didn \'t know Tom well, like anyone else at Antilles while Tom was there, I knew who he was and always felt the joy of just being around such a wonderful, quiet, friendly person. Like another classmate said, I never thought of Tom witout thinking of Ed! When I attended the All Class Reunion in 2005, I heard time and time again the question, Has anyone heard from Tom or Ed? They were the two truly Big Men on Campus! I also remembered what a great golfer he was. My brother, Alan Boyd,(Class of 1966), played golf with him many times. It was wonderful to read about his life after Antilles, and to know that even though his life was cut short, Tom lived a full, rich, and loving life. I agree with everone else, Tom was truly a kindperson, and was the epitome of what being a gentleman is. Tom will be greatly missed. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife and sons. May the memories they have sustain them through the coming years, and may they be comforted by the knowledge that everyone who knew him, as a close friend, a classmate, or a passing acquaintance, was touched in such an everlasting way. May God be with you. Comments By:......Ivan Joel Alvira ......... That night, we came back together as a group and ate dinner at the Benihana Restaurant. Afterwards, we headed to the Shimmer Cabaret (we had a space reserved) and danced to the music of a live band. The musical group provided a lot of music of the 70 \'s, so that added a very special touch to the evening. It was as if the repertoire was tailored, customized just for us! And finally, on Sunday morning approximately 10 of us who were still at the hotel met for breakfast. I want to thank each and everyone who attended for their support. THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL TIME!!!!! And I \'d also like to thank those who although were not able to attend, offered words of encouragement. I appreciate you! I have no doubt that the the vision of the Reunion implemented as far back as last year with the planning of the Reunion in Orlando which had to be postponed (which was reconnecting, renewing and establishing bonds was accomplished) not only within our Class of 1979, but within other classes. And that does my heart good!!!!!!!I will be posting pics this week (most likely on the AHS Alumni website; will be letting classmates know where). And more on future plans later! Keep in touch! Two huge losses for everyone who \'s been part of Antilles. Very sad to know. I have many memories of Mrs. Woolis, one being her walking around with her chains and padlocks so no one would loot her refrigerators. Wilo, I was in that Home Ec class with you and I clearly remember the havoc. Me and a fellow classmate were the only senior in that class. After every single recipe, we would dump the egg shells on top of the cabinets. We had a huuuuge egg shell collection up there. The other collection was cookie dough stuck on the ceiling. Also unforgettable were the bloated cookies the next period class got after someone in our class tampered the flour with baking powder. Mrs. Woolis found out about everything, and like Wilo says, she kept her cool. She was soooo nice, a saint, like Dean says. Of Mrs. Edminsten I have one very special memory. I had long hair and one day, my friends were teasing me about it in her class. On a quiet moment, she goes over to me and tells me that perhaps I should cut it. My hair was my pride, so I asker her why. And with a soft smile that came from her heart she answered: Because you have beautiful eyes . People, I just melted. But no, I didn \'t cut my hair. Mrs. Woolis and Mrs. Edminsten, you will both be missed. To their respective families and relatives, you were all blessed for having them. Andy O \'Neill Comments By:......Lisa M. Although Katrina did minimal damage to the Ft Lauderdale beach area, she did knock out electricity to 95% of the area for the entire weekend which left us without a headquarters to meet at. The few hotels with electricity were booked solid by Friday evening. Regardless, there were a few diehards that were able to find each other and have a great time Friday night shooting the breeze at the Best Western bar (next to the Irlands Hotel), and a blast Saturday night at the Hard Rock Casino. Joe Arroyo (72) and Mabel Velez (72) had us over Saturday for feast \'en and drink \'en; Luis Rivera (74)had us over Saturday night for more food and drinks; and Janet Santiago (75) hauled us to the Hard Rock for dancing and yes more drinking. Saw him last February and he showed me some video of the infamous 1992 Powderpuff in which a fight broke out between Osiris Soto and I belive Cassandra?Gonzalez? or maybe it was Marie....anyway I still can get a hold of him since my mother is a teacher there (Mrs. Sierra). On a side note, any class of 1992 students out there there has been some comunication going on through e-mail started by our class president Jesus Suarez. It seems that a small reunion in Florida is on the horizon, so if you are on the outside looking in drop me an e-mail to see how everything is going. To Nickie Ivanovsky and fellow AHS Alumni. Nickie this is Eddie Lopez and I responding to your request on the whereabouts of Bob Hurd. Bob is living in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Bob, Frank Laras, Miguel Nieves, Jose Lamboy, Irving Perez, myself and our gals had dinner at the Fort Bragg Officers Club back in January 2004. This was the last time I saw Bob or any of the other guys before moving to Wurzburg, Germany. Bob and I on occasion would go out to eat and go to the goverment auctions together. Bob had been ill but is doing better. Bob, Frank, Jose, Miguel, and Irving live in the Fort Bragg area. I met Irving at the Fort Bragg PX and during our conversation he told me that his cousin was Nydia Trinidad. Nydia was a cheerleader just as yourself (Nickie). I believe Nydia graduated the same year as Miguel. In 1986 I ran into Bob at JFK Special Warfare Center barbershop while he was getting a haircut, Jose in 1990 at the mall, Frank 2003 at Home Depot, and I looked up Miguel in 2003 after AHS reunion in San Juan. Freddie Velez and Sammy Vasquez told me he was living in the Fayetteville area and asked me to look him up. Nickie, I left the Fort Bragg area in March 2004 and as far as I know Bob is still there. I have to go now and I wish you and all the Antilles Alumni around the world a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May God Bless you and all your families. Just wanted to let everyone know that I survived Ivan and now Katrina. I live in Mobile, AL which is not that far from New Orleans. I am enlisted in the Coast Guard, stationed on one of the cutters here in Mobile, AL. Just wanted to let you all know that things are slowly improving throughout the Gulf Coast. I had a chance to see the devastationed caused by these tremendous storms and it has been a very humbling experience. Though I was not directly involved with the rescue efforts, I stand proud of the men and women within my organization that conducted the rescue of the citizens of Lousiana, Mississippi and Alabama Gulf Coast areas. The Coast Guard not only conduct rescues of our fellow citizens but, helped re-open the waterways to commercial traffic that supplies our coal, fuel and other natural resources by rebuilding all Aids to Navigations to all the major ports in record time. My shipmates and I endured long work hours and many days underway in the hot sun and high humidity so prevalent here in the South. We were lucky that we in Mobile had minor damage but, those shipmates that lived in or near the area of devastation not only had to deal with the aforementioned work conditions but, the uncertainty of when they would be reunited with loved ones that had evacuated prior to Katrina \'s landfall. I hope that those who where affected by Katrina will be able to recover soon. Good luck to all. Semper Paratus Always Ready Comments By:......gladys carrasquillo (now mrs. pratt) .........
